On January 29, 2009, the Alberta Housing and Urban Affairs announced that the Treaty 7 Management Corporation would receive $ 1.5 million to address the “Home Ownership Program” in southern Alberta; the funding is in its final year of allocation.
The Treaty 7 Management Corporation has received a number of inquiries relating to the commencement of the program and would like to address the program in terms of the present status.
The program is basically a homeownership program that allows individuals seeking to purchase a home off the boundaries of a reserve a grant in the amount of 10% or up to a maximum of $ 20,000.00 to be used as a down payment. The individual does have to qualify for a mortgage.
Although the announcement has been made there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of setting up the trust, terms of reference, structure and allocation process. Needless to mention we do have to abide by the “Conditional Grant Funding Agreement” set forth by the Province of Alberta.
It is anticipated that the program will be ready to be formalized and announced to the Aboriginal members of Southern Alberta by May 1, 2009. The announcement will include all information pertaining to the program and identify the application process. The information will be posted on the Treaty 7 Management Corporation website at www.treaty7.org.
